Is it better to pressure wash or clean a deck?
For most decks, a combination of both works best rather than choosing one exclusively. Soap-and-water cleaning with a soft bristle brush is the safest first step, especially for composite decking, and often removes the majority of surface dirt and mildew on its own. Pressure washing becomes useful for deeper, more stubborn buildup that scrubbing alone can’t fully remove, but it needs to be done carefully — low pressure, a wide fan nozzle, and a safe distance from the surface — to avoid damaging wood grain or a composite deck’s protective shell. For older, early-generation composite decking specifically, several manufacturers actually discourage pressure washing altogether, recommending soap and water instead. Checking your specific decking manufacturer’s guidance before reaching for a pressure washer is always the safer starting point.
